Some people say it's the "pluff mud", the swampy, dark, sticky mud in the Lowcountry, but it's more than that. The first time I ever went to Charleston, even without having any affiliation or connection to the city I smelled that smell and knew it was my favorite place in the world. It's like my body knew that smell meant good things would happen there.
